Mantario Marathon
A Fat Ass event--No fee, no aid, no swag, no whining.
Mantario Marathon
It is a 2 day overnight trail race where participants are self-supportive and camp overnight at the mid point.
Held at the end of every September since 1980, The "Mantario Marathon" is a self-reliant 2-day journey through some of the Whiteshell's finest Canadian Shield terrain.
Saturday the race begins with a mass start at the Caddy Lake South Mantario Trailhead, finishing at Moosehead, the halfway overnight campsite. To complete the race participants need to be self-reliant & carry everything needed for 2 days, including the halfway camp. Day 2, features a reversed start based on individual times from Saturday. Sunday's first start is at 7 AM and everyone else follows based on their time lead or placement from the day before. The race finishes at the Big Whiteshell North Mantario Trailhead.
The format is similar but different to UK and other European Mountain Marathons. A 2 day run where participants camp overnight. Mountain Marathons also involve orienteering from point to point whereas the Mantario Marathon follows a trail. Mantario Marathon is through boreal forest and Canadian Shield whereas Mountain Marathons are often on more open moorland and mountainous terrain. It is a Fat Ass style event, i.e. non organized, and is steeped in the spirit of trail running—challenging, fun and free. People running the same route in a public park. Your responsibility is your own. No liability accepted, no insurance, no race director, no event staff, no organization, no company, etc.
